This piece is from a series of 30+ works. I am exploring the fascinating and infinite underworld of bugs. These images are under-laid with my new passion for metal-leafing, which promotes the precious qualities of these under-sung creatures.
Mormon Cricket, Anabrus simplex - This creature is actually a shieldbacked katydid, not a cricket. A pest of the west and not liked by many, but I still admit to finding them good-looking. We did not have these in the Pacific Northwest where I grew up, so the first Mormon cricket I saw in Idaho blew me away. This one is a female - note the long ovipositor (for laying eggs) at the back end. Check out how these crickets are featured in the Mormon story of The Miracle Of The Gulls on Wikipedia. Native to the Western US.
