Portfolio of Works
Land
I strive to keep my painting kit light and portable so I can paint on location and while traveling. Oil paints and clean-up are a challenge to travel with, but I have learned some tricks. Transient light and a limited time window encourage quick observation, spontaneity and often an abstract quality.
Water
I love water - sitting by it, swimming or boating in it, listening to it, and of course PAINTING it, while drinking it all in. Water is, for me, best when painted on location.
Creatures & People
The eyes, the fur, feather or scales, the varied and special forms and patterns that creatures exhibit - they are endlessly fascinating.
More creatures can be found in these collections:
Architectural, Nautical & Vehicles
This collection celebrates the forms and moods of human-made spaces, vessels & vehicles.
Still Life & Botanical
I see "Still Life" as subjects of any size,
but that I don't need to chase
(like creatures)
or chase the light
(like landscapes and waterscapes).
Still life offers more control of subject and time,
an opportunity to relax, observe & experiment.
Imagination & Weird
IMAGINATION: These are images that fell out of my dreams and imagination and are not based on direct observation or photos. Some of the works shown here are from a series nicknamed "The Blobs". I started by making various patterns and shapes, moving around oil paints using sprayed water, dribbled solvent, puffs of breath, tipping the canvas and other interventions. My goal was to discover a picture in each of the layered patterns, to mostly let the painting tell me what it wants to be. This is like looking for images in clouds or Rorschach patterns. All are oil on canvas.
This series could alternatively be titled "My Brain on COVID", because that was my reality as this series got rolling around the New Year of 2023. I was not feeling all that bad, just forced to be alone with my imagination. Gravity need not apply.
WEIRD:
Rivers & Travel
Summer 2026 finds me by the river with my paints. These are from a trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Most are works-in-progress.
